Architects: @ The Centre for Vernacular Architecture

My husband dreams of a mud and brick geometrical home in a far-away village by the pond. I think I am in his dreamland.

These brick , mud, random rubble and laterite stone oppulant spaces are created by The Centre for Vernacular Architecture. The centre is a non-profit organisation and a co-operative of building crafts persons.

The centre creates spaces that are cost effective, ecologically sensible and culturally relevant.

cool your home with the help of sun

 solcool millennia-unit-v4_

Solcool consumes 85% less energy than the conventional air conditioner. It is hybrid, it can run on four solar panels, it can run on backup battery too. One unit can cool a large room.

Solcool millenia 4 (dc,2 ton) air conditioner can be installed in the attic, outside, in a utility closet, garage or warehouse. It is a wheeled, portable version.

The unit can also be used to provide heat, and with an optional gadget, can take the moisture that it sucks out of the air and purify it into drinking water.

The units are being manufactured in Israel. It is made by GPM, Aqua Cell technologies Inc, and solcool Israel and marketed by Solcool One , LLC.

Solcool was talking about putting its retail price under $5,000. (cost of solar panels if opted would be extra).

Well I still have to make calculations as to if I can afford it.

a mud wall and coloured bottles

Can you guess that it is innovative use of empty glass bottles!

This pictures are from eco-township Navadarshanam situated along the border of Thally reserve forest at Tamilnadu and Karnataka borders. Here an alternate way of life and working is translated in ecological living. The homes are built with Sun baked mud blocks for walls, terracotta tiles, red oxide and cement for flooring.
Terracotta and cement jaalis (lattice), recycled wood and bottles are used as design accents.

wooling around

Can you imagine your planters made of wool? Yes  designers Jaime Salm and Roger Allen at MIO has designed these softbowls made of wool which can be used as containers or planters etc.

beehive-soft-bowls.jpg

What captures my attention is the revelation that eco has competition from eco. This bowl  takes up only one -tenth of energy needed to make ceramic planters or bowl!

Another interest is that these bowls are manufactured in Philadelphia by one of the last remaining millineries in the US and each container is handmade by local crafts people.

India rediscovering her grass of origin

Konkan railway has started to plant vetiver grass along its laterite slope to stop landsliding. Roots of vetiver grass grow at least 3 metres inside the soil and its fibrous nature bind and hold soil tightly. The roots have strength of 1/6 of mild steel (eco steel!).

The konkan railway region is one of the most scenically green belt in India. Konkan railway has been called a tech marvel for its difficult terrain, tunnels and sky bus project. It has added one more green feather to its cap. Vetiver grass is not only a green solution but it’s primary centre of origin is India.

It was long long ago when I was in school, I had seen ‘ khus ki tatti’ (vetiver roots screen) at my maternal uncle’s place. The screen was used for cooling (eco-manufacturers listening?) and it gave mild earthy aroma. I do not see vetiver roots screen anywhere now.

Among many uses vetiver grass is used for soil and water conservation. Vetiver grass is called ‘khas’ in Hindi and is used  now mainly by itra (scent) manufacturers.

I have also rediscovered this-people’s-grass. Beautiful handicraft’s were used to be made from vetiver. These days I see cane and coir handicrafts  but unfortunately not a vetiver grass handicraft.

I wish to revive vetiver grass craftmanship. Any artisan listening?

simplicity rocks

harrisonrock_lores1.jpg

This Ryan Frank design could not have been more simple,  more down to earth, more recyclable, more beautiful and more eco.

When I saw this  brick and cork box called Harrison’s Rock first on BOUF, I started dreaming of so many dmps ( do myself projects) that I knew it is going to be my evergreen favourite.

I always wanted to do something with brick and glass.  I still have drawings of a shelf made of these two materials which I wanted to make 3 years ago. Ryan Frank’s free-range furniture designs have inspired me to bring out my dowdy furniture drawings and make them see light of the day.
